The absence of grog gives No. 480 Stoneware Clay without Grog a smoother surface and more plasticity. An excellent clay for throwing, hand modeling, and casting but not as suitable for sculpture as No. 48 Stoneware Clay with Grog.
The firing range is Cone 5-10 (2205ºF-2381ºF) with best results at Cone 5. Bisque fire to Cone 04 (1971ºF, 1077ºC). The recommended glaze firing is Cone 5 (2205ºF). When fired to Cone 5-6, 480-M is a warm buff color peppered with dark specks. At lower temperatures, this clay is somewhat lighter and less vitreous. At Cone 5, shrinkage is 10.6% and absorption is 5.2%. At Cone 10, shrinkage is 10.8% and absorption is 1.9%.
This 50 lb. box includes two 25 lb. blocks of clay, each in a polyethylene storage bags, so feel free to use the amount required and store the rest for future use. Clay in moist form presents no hazard.
