This is an open oil studio for painters of all levels, whether you want instruction or just some company while you paint.
Each session will start off with a quick demo. The rest of the class will be dedicated to helping you with your paintings. Bring in old ones your stuck on or if you need helping starting a new painting. Bring in any supplies you have and anything you want to paint.
There is a limit of 7 people per session, so make sure to sign up two weeks in advance to hold your space.

Portrait Drawing Workshop with Bethany Root
Saturday, September 12th, 2009. 3pm – 7pm • $35
Learn the basics of turning a photograph into a beautiful hand drawn
graphite portrait. By the end of class you will have learned the basic
techniques of portrait rendering, leaving you with a solid foundation for
your own artistic exploration. During this four hour class, Bethany will
show students the basics of determining facial shape, blocking in the
features, shading, and the finishing touches like hair, clothes, and
background. Students are asked to bring multiple photographs to work
from (5x7 or larger), as well as any portraits they may have drawn in the

Intro to Watercolor With Robert Jenkins
Saturday September 19th, 2009. 10am - 4pm • $25
Have you ever wondered how watercolor artists start their paintings? How
they get
their colors organized? How they stretch their paper and lay down the
drawing? In
this class, Robert will show you how to arrange colors from warm to cool
on your
palette, as well as how to stretch your watercolor paper. In addition, we
will walk
through techniques such as the initial sketch and basic color theory.
Students are
asked to bring a photograph they wish to paint. This class is for
everyone, from
the absolute beginner to the advanced student looking to learn something new.
Drawing skills are helpful but not required. The workshop will be from 10
to 4 with
a 1 hour break. Please be sure to bring a bag lunch. Supply list will be
provided upon registration.

Beginning Oils with Katie Blackwell
Saturday September 26th, 2009. 10am - 5pm • $25
If you’ve never touched Oils before or if you need a reminder of the
basics, this class is for you. Previous experience in drawing or another medium would be helpful. During the class we will be going over the proper use of supplies needed
to do oils and the vast choices of materials you could use.
There will be demos of certain techniques to create different effects in
your painting. I will help you start your own paintings with any picture of your choice.
By the end of the class you’ll walk away with the tools and understanding
of the fundamentals to finish the painting yourself.
Please bring a picture to work on, as well as a bagged lunch.

Watercolor With Sandy Siepert
Sept 1, 15, 22, 29, Oct 6 and 20th.
Sandy Siepert has been watercolor painting for 25 years. She took her first weekly class in Houston, Texas with Barbara Jeffery Clay, who has become a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. Sandy has taken workshops from Tom Lynch, Jean Gasdorf, Mary Ann Clark, and Ann Vaslik. She is a member Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Guild of Charlotte Artists, and Watercolor Artists of Charlotte. She was a signature member of the Nevada Watercolor Society. Her work has been seen in juried shows in Texas, Nevada, Alabama and North Carolina; lately she won First Prize at the Summer Show of GCA and Second Prize at Summertime Juried Art Competition in Concord, NC. She and her husband, Steve, show their work at the Regional Farmer’s Market at Yorkmont Road, on Saturdays, March thru December. Sandy’s work is described as loose and colorful. Her work is representational and includes landscapes, floral and still lives. One of her favorite activities is to run away to workshops. The latest one was in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, where she stayed a week and studied with Alexis Lavine of Greensboro, NC. Demonstrations and class work will include transparent color vs. opaque color theory, color mixing, pouring color with use of mask, discussions about composition and design and use of original photographs for artwork.

Intro to Anime and Manga by Bethany Root
Saturday, October 3rd 2009. 11:00 am – 5:00 pm • Cost $25
Do you love the shows and graphic novels but don’t know how to get started
drawing them yourself? If so, this class is for you. Learn the basics of
how to draw the face, figure, and costumes so you can draw characters from
any show or book, even your own!
By the end of the class you will have learned solid foundational
techniques, giving you many of the tools you need to begin exploring your
own style. In addition to several demonstrations of professional
materials such as Copic inking tools, markers, screen tones, and computer
software, students will be furnished with a full list of quality
references for further study. A self-taught anime artist and teacher,
Bethany will help students take the first step into the wonderful world of
the Japanese comic style.
Class is directed toward Middle School / High School Students, but any age
over 10 is welcome, including adults.
If desired, feel free to bring samples of your drawings, a few of your
favorite anime or manga graphic novels, as well as a bag lunch.

Celia Buchanan: Textile and Fiber Arts Workshop.

Explore the diverse and fascinating world of Fine Art Fabric through a
study of fabric patterning techniques. Students will be able to expand and
diversify their skills and talent through this introduction to Fiber Art.
Using dyes and paints the workshop will cover techniques such as Silk
Painting, Shibori, Indigo Dyeing, Block Printing and Screen Printing onto
fabric. It will concentrate on the Fine Art applications of these
techniques and culminate in the students holding a broad understanding of
this rich and complex medium.
Scottish Artist and Masters Degree Graduate from the City University in
London and formally the Fibers Lecturer at the Boca Museum School of Art;
Celia Buchanan has been working in her field for over 20 years. She now
works and lives in SE FL and teaches throughout the SE USA. Celia’s chosen
medium is surface design which she now incorporates into mixed media
pieces.
The two day class will cover Silk Painting: its watercolor onto silk. The
lustrous quality of the silk is both seductive and vibrant and offers a
new and exciting medium for expression.
Shibori and indigo dyeing. Learn the ancient art of dyeing fabric using
these wonderful techniques. Its part art, part alchemy and 100% pure
magic. Polychromatic screen printing Learn how to easily reproduce multicolored
artwork onto fabric, paper and clothing.

Beginners Painting with Acrylics with Robert Jenkins

Whats the first thing you think of when the word acrylic comes to mind?
Oh it dries to fast, or I cant really get the effect I want. Well in this
work shop Robert will show how to take the worlds most versatile painting
medium and create something completely your own. If you've been using
acrylic in traditional painting forms, this class you'll find a grand,
wild and inventive way to manipulate of acrylic Robert will show you
what certain mediums do and help you to find your own creative way of
painting. Acrylic can be a fun way to paint if you never picked up paint
before but want to just have a hobby or you just want to put paint onto
canvas and be wild in your art this is the class for you!

Mat Cutting with Kevin Brown, Framer at Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff
Saturday October 24th, 2009 • 1:30pm – 4:30pm • $25.00
Learn how to cut mats with beveled windows and the “fool proof” method of
cutting the perfect double mat. Hands on experience using Logan Framer’s
Edge and Simplex Plus mat cutters. We will discuss how to select the best
mat colors to enhance your artwork, border sizes and other topics of
interest. Depending on participant interest, other topics might include
how to properly mount your artwork and assemble the framing package and/or
how to properly frame an original pastel.
Each participant will leave with at least one single mat and one double
mat they have cut themselves, so you are encouraged to bring in your
artwork so you can make sure your mats are cut to the correct size for
each piece.
Participants will receive a 10% discount on all art supplies purchased at
Cheap Joe’s on the day of the workshop.

"Painting Water with Pastels" mini-workshop with Carmella Jarvi

Learn to better paint water with soft pastels from an artist who’s
painted water for years. See demos and get one on one instruction
too. Carmella Jarvi is an award winning professional artist and now
has her own instructional DVD “Painting Water with Pastels” (which

Only $30 for two hour mini-workshop! Minimum 5 and maximum of 15.

• Backing board (a stiff surface, big enough for paper) & tape

colors [Rembrandt or comparable recommended. Unison Pastels are

• Pastel paper: Plan on 2 sheets of pastel paper (or can tear large
sheet down). Recommend medium to darker colors, think variety &

Portraits in Oil with Katherine Blackwell
Saturday, November 14th, 10-4pm • Cost $25
Come and learn the techniques of creating a beautiful recognizable
portrait. You might not finish it but you’ll walk away with the tools and
understanding of the fundamentals to finish the painting yourself. This
workshop is for beginners and intermediate levels or anyone who wants a
brush up on the basics. Don’t worry if you haven’t done oils before
either, we’ll work on techniques, a better understanding of the materials
and there will be lot’s of demo’s and time for questions.
The focus will be on basics of proportion, perspective and color theory of
the skin and you will start the base painting of your portrait. Then we’ll
concentrate on the details of the face, and techniques to creating life
like features.
What you will take away from this is the ability not only to paint a
portrait but to paint what you see in order to get a likeness, using
perspective and proportions.
