I recommend 300 lb. Arches. Four to five sheets should be sufficient for the workshop as we will cut those 22" x 30" sheets into halves and quarters. I don't mess with the 140 lb paper that much so I won't mention it there. I tape my paper down with masking tape to several pieces of Foam-cor board cut slightly larger than the paper I'm using.
Outside Painting
I use a French Easel for outdoor work. The half French Easel is lighter and used for back-packing to painting sites that are some distances away. A bag full of your other supplies including a container of painting water, brushes, papertowels, pencils, palette, paints, Exacto-knife, kneaded eraser, sun block, etc.
Indoor Painting:
Same equipment. Bring some of your sketches and/or photos of subjects you are enthused about for indoor work. A note book for taking notes is important for Indoor and Outdoor painting.
I am currently using the John Pike Palette, but their are a number of types in the market.
For brushes I use a large Ox hair, synthetic or sable 1 1/2" to 2", a large round and several small rounds/riggers (optional), a hog's hair brushbristle brush, 1/2 inch.
