Professional Oil Paints for Artists

Interested in knowing what professional oil paints, or artist oil paints are all about? We bet that we can help out with that. In essence all paints are a combination of two things… pigment, which gives the paint its color, and binder, which gives paint its consistency and working properties. Oil paint is one of the oldest paint media of all. For centuries artists and colourmen have been mixing different oils with dry pigment to create colors from all over the spectrum.

The most commonly used oils that are used for oil paints are Safflower and Linseed oils. Each pigment is matched up with the ideal oil to create a paint that is absolutely loaded with the most color possible. What do we mean by this exactly? This means that each pigment has its own “mood” or way that it behaves. A trained colourman or paint maker knows how much of each pigment will mix with each oil before the paint becomes too thick. An experienced paint maker can finely tune each mixture so that each color they make has the most concentrated color available. So, each and every stroke of paint will have a big punch of color, even with the tiniest dab of paint. The technical term for this great characteristic is “pigment load”. Professional oils have the highest pigment load possible.
