This section of the Cheap Joe’s web site is entitled Specialty boards. Each product is indeed a board, which has a different specialty, and is good for a little something different. Let us tell you a little bit about some of them.
Backing board
The term backing board can have a few different meanings. In the context of this chapter full of product we have two specifics. Backing board can be an art material that you use to put a sheet of paper on while working, like the Champion watercolor board. They aren’t for painting on themselves, they are for use with some other product when painting. A backing board can also be the rigid portion of an illustration board.
Bristol board
Bristol board is named for a place in England where it was first created. Since thick high quality fine art paper is hard to create and expensive too, some creative people on the other side of the “big drink” thought it might be interesting to put several pieces of thinner paper together to create a thicker paper. Bristol board is made from these ply’s of paper that are bound with heat. For example, 2 sheets = 2 ply, and so on.
Illustration board
Illustration board is made from a paper that is applied to a backing board. There are all kinds of different papers that can be made into Illustration board. There are different surfaces as well to suit particular artist needs.
Watercolor board
Watercolor board is made from watercolor board that is made from a sheet of watercolor paper that is attached to a backing board. There are a myriad of different watercolor boards just like the different varieties of watercolor paper that are available.
