Watercolor Palettes

So you’re anxious to begin painting with watercolor. You have your paint, you have your watercolor brushes, you have paper and all that good stuff. What are you going to put your new watercolor paint in? Well, you need a watercolor palette! Not just any watercolor palette either, one that works well with the way you paint. We have just the artist palette for that. Seriously, we do. We have about every art palette you can imagine for watercolor. We have plastic watercolor palettes, we have porcelain palettes, and we could go on. To help you make a decision about your newest art supply, below is some information about watercolor palettes.

Palette Arrangements:
Some artists find that the arrangement of their watercolor palette is very important to helping them find their paints easily and to paint the best that they can. Some artists prefer to have their colors in a circular arrangement like a color wheel, other don’t. About every art palette that we have is arranged differently, so check each option out carefully and see what seems to make sense to you.

Wells:
This term refers to the little areas where the watercolor paints rest. Some are larger to hold larger amounts of paint, some are smaller to allow for more color options inside the palette. But, what most artist don’t understand is what an open well is. A watercolor palette with open wells means that the area where you put your paint is missing one side or a dam. That means it is like a horse corral with no door. An open well is great for artist who use big brushes because this shape well allows the brush to reach the paint much easier.
