In this section we have a wonderful selection of different art drawing pencils, fine art colored pencils and artist crayons. Each item has a different special characteristic and something special to offer each artist. To try to make sure that you get the very best art material for your style, below is some information to help you make just the right selection. Fine Art Colored Pencils: There are two basic varieties of colored pencil available to artists today, colored pencils or watercolor pencils. Watercolor pencils are a fine art colored pencil where the colored core of the pencil is bound with a binder that is similar to watercolor. Drawings created with these art pencils can be blended with a wet paintbrush for beautiful passages that look like watercolor. Then there are traditional fine art colored pencils. There are two varieties of colored pencil here as well. Wax based colored pencils and non-wax based colored pencil. Both are really wonderful, but it is important to understand how each variety works so that you get the ones that right for you. Wax based colored pencils allow the ability to easily create deep rich color on the drawing surface. These colored pencils can be layered. However, when you put more than just a few layers on top on one another you may get wax bloom. Wax bloom is when the wax builds up and causes a white sheen on your drawing. For artists who do not use several layers of color in their drawings this would not be a concern. Then there are colored pencils that are bound with other substances like kaolin. These pemcils have a somewhat harder feel on the paper but artists can use these art pencils to layer color after color with no worry of wax bloom. This variety of colored pencil does require a little more time or pressure to deliver really dark values on to the drawing surface… but it’s worth it. Watercolor Crayons: This art materials specialty is a real luxury and a wonderful tool for any artist. Watercolor artists especially love this art crayon because they offer artists an easy way to add a variety of textural color to their paintings. Watercolor crayons are a artist crayon that is made from a semi-soft watercolor. Once color has been applied to the painting surface from a watercolor crayon, those colors can be blended easily with a wet paintbrush. These special drawing crayons can easily add some flair to almost any watermedia work. Pastel Pencils: Then there are pastel pencils. These fine art pencils are essentially a stick of pastel encased in wood. Pastel artists love pastel pencils because they are wonderful for adding highlights and detail to their pastel paintings. Pastel pencils come in a variety of consistencies just like regular artist pastels. Pastel pencils are also popular with artists who don’t love getting pastel all over themselves and their work area. Hopefully this has helped you understand a little more about the art materials that we have for you to choose from. Keep in mind, we have great art pencil kits as in small or large assortments to suit whatever your need may be. Try some specialty pencils or art crayons, we are sure you won’t be disappointed! |
