Gatorboard

What is Gatorboard and why do you need it? Gatorboard is lightweight, durable and great for stretching watercolor paper. We offer sheets that are custom sized to handle full and half sheets of watercolor paper. Sometimes you will find this product referred to as Gator board foam, either way you need at least one sheet in your art supplies. Check below for the sizes and different colors that we have available. No, the color makes no difference as to how your Gatorboard will perform, just whatever color that you like best.

Here are some specific tips about how to use Gatorboard.

• 1. Do your drawing on dry paper.
• 2. Soak paper with clean water - either with a 2" wash brush, a big sponge, or you can soak it in your tub.
• 3. When paper is thoroughly soaked, lay it on the Gatorboard. If any bubbles or buckles appear, simply lift on the side of the paper to the buckle. Now, slowly lay the paper back down on the Gatorboard while applying gentle pressure with your wet brush to remove the buckle.
• 4. Once it is completely flat, lay paper towels over the entire surface to remove the excess water. The paper should be damp to the touch, but no glisten to it.
• 5. Paint away. Notice how you can still get a nice hard edge even though the paper is wet. It’s a fun way to work.
• 6. When the corners begin to turn up (drying) use a household stapler and staple the four corners. Put a staple or two in between on that outer edge.
• 7. Allow to dry. (this should take 1-2 days) Run a dull kitchen knife under the edges and the staples will pop right out. Or simply staple your paper to the Gatorboard. Paint. Allow to dry and remove.
