What is Gum Arabic? By adding Winsor & Newton Gum Arabic watercolor medium to your watercolors has three effects: it slows down the drying time of the paint, giving you slightly longer to work on creating your image or working wet into wet; it adds further transparency to your watercolours and it increases gloss. Gum Arabic washes will have greater depth and appear more luminous that regular washes alone. Gum Arabic is one of the most regularly used binders when watercolors are created. Gum Arabic is usually mixed into the watercolor wash but it can be added to your water if you prefer to use this medium throughout the painting. Gum Arabic should not be used directly from the bottle onto your painting because a thick film will become brittle. For serious watercolor painters, this medium is a must for their watercolor art supply collection. This watercolor medium is available in a 75 ml. glass bottle.
