The Secrets of Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor DVD with Steve Rogers. In another of his series of exciting and informative DVDs, “The Secrets of Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor”, Steve shares the secrets he has learned in a lifetime of painting landscapes en plein air and in his studio. We see Steve paint a beautiful watercolor, from start to finish, of a group of old Greek fishing boats on the beach. This sun filled subject is ideal for explaining the dramatic and subtle qualities of light and shadow and as Steve paints he reveals their secrets and how to paint them in watercolor. What began as a few notes scratched out on a napkin, has evolved over the years into a full day’s lesson that still contains the “napkin version”, for those who want it simple , but goes far beyond that to provide a detailed explanation of how light and shadows function in the landscape and how to depict them in your painting. This DVD is that lesson. Chapter one is a warm-up exercise about which colors to use in painting light and shadow and when to use them. The next is “Light and Shadow”, a demonstration in a dark room using a single light source and various colored cloths to show the effects of “reflected-light “and how it describes form. In the following chapters on “darks and mid-values”, “cool shadows and reflected light”, and “cast shadows” and “details”, Steve paints his watercolor, “Chios Boats” revealing all the secrets as they present themselves in the painting. The final chapter is a gallery of Steve’s paintings used to illustrate the effects of light and shadow. 126 minute art instruction video.
