Barbara Nechis Painting The Essence of Nature
In Watercolor
April 23 - 27, 2007
The
objective of Barbara Nechis's workshop is to introduce the participants
to her thought process in constructing a painting. By learning how she
thinks as she demonstrates various watercolor techniques, students receive
tools to stimulate their creative imagination to produce original design
in their own personal statements.
Nechis
will present and demonstrate a different method or idea each day. Students
may work with either abstract or realistic forms. Nechis will present
a wide range of subject matter but the emphasis will be on concept, color
and design. Various techniques will be demonstrated to show students how
to construct original paintings from both source material and their imagination.
Topics
to be covered include wet-into-wet (floral and landscape), under-painting
and layering, designing with shapes (using realistic or abstract forms)
and foolproof methods for producing clean washes without mud. Daily demonstrations
and critiques by Nechis will last about an hour so that time for painting
and individual assistance will be ample. Critiques will approach problem
solving upon the premise that there is always a solution that can turn
an unsuccessful painting into a successful one.
Barbara
Nechis is a graduate of the University of Rochester with a B.A. in history
and fine arts and an M.S. from Alfred University. She was a faculty member
of Parsons School of Design for many years and has taught seminars at Pratt
Institute, throughout North America, and abroad. She has served as a juror
and director of the American Watercolor Society and is the author of Watercolor
From the Heart (Watson-Guptill Publications, 1993) and Watercolor the Creative
Experience (North Light Books, 1979). Her work appears in many publications
and collections, among them the Butler Institute of American Art, IBM and
Citicorp. She maintained a studio in New Rochelle, NY for many years before
relocating to the Napa Valley in Northern California.
