Grumbacher Pre-tested Professional Oil Paint, Payne's Grey, is made with pure pigments milled in alkali-refined linseed oil. Payne's Grey is a transparent Blue-Black named for the English Watercolorist William Payne (1760-1820), who introduced it in his work in the late 18th Century. This oil paint primary modern use is for 'toning down' colors and for creating shadows. Formulated from Nearly Pure Amorphous Carbon (PBK6) and Complex Silicate of Sodium and Aluminum with Sulfur (PB29).
