Create dynamic art in this art workshop! Starting a painting with color, texture, gestural marks and layers may seem like “chaos”, but it delivers vital energy that is both fun and intuitive. Great design and composition are the elements that bring “order” to the rich starts and turn them into an attention-getting and expressive finish. Applying strong design and compositional skills are a major focus of this art workshop. Beginner or advanced – you are encouraged to discover and explore your unique expression and personal imagery in realism, abstraction or non-objective. Demonstrations, directed exercises, specific examples and individual attention will introduce new materials, techniques and concepts. Specific lessons on texture building, color concepts, layering, how to do a value study, understanding design principles and elements, and more will be presented. Kathleen is a full time artist, dividing her time between painting, teaching, gallery ownership (20 years) and judging. She holds signature status in several national organizations including AWS (Dolphin Fellow), NWS, TWSA (Master Artist), and WHS. Kathleen has garnered numerous awards including the •AWS Silver Medal of Honor •AWS Mary Bryan Memorial Award •TWSA Best of Show Skyledge Award •TWSA Winsor Newton Award •ISEA Best of Show Gracie Award •NWS Potomac Valley Watercolorists Award •Audubon Artists Aquamedia Award of Excellence •WCUSA Juror’s Award •CWA Best of Show. Kathleen has taught extensively in the US as well as internationally over the past 20 years.
Level 2 (and up): Beginner-Intermediate - Reviews basic techniques for beginners as needed, and offers practice exercises at an average pace to assist in gaining confidence and experience with the medium. Assistance is given to all.
OR: Register at least 6 months in advance and enroll in our 50/50 plan (half of the tuition at the time of registration and the other half 60 days prior to the workshop) and receive 7.5% off* of the workshop tuition.
OR: Register at least 6 months in advance and enroll in our 3 month payment plan and receive 5% off* of the workshop tuition.*Registrations are first come, first serve for remaining spaces available in the workshop.

$100 is non-refundable for all workshops, regardless of when you cancel. If you cancel your workshop at least 60 daysprior to the workshop, you will receive a refund of all money except for the $100 fee. There is NO refund, for any reason, if you cancel within 60 days of the workshop. We understand that last minute emergencies, illnesses, or conflicts come up that can't be controlled, and we are truly sorry, but due to committed expenses on the part of Cheap Joe's, we are not able to make exceptions.
The purchase of optional travel insurance is HIGHLY recommended to protect you if an unforeseen personal emergency should arise. Some credit cards, auto clubs, travel services, or online companies offer travel insurance for nonrefundable expenses. If it’s necessary for either an instructor or CJAS to cancel a workshop, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not other related expenses.
