In The Secrets of Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor, Steve Rogers shares the secrets he has learned in a lifetime of painting landscapes plein-air and in his studio. Watch as Steve paints a group of old Greek fishing boats on the beach from start to finish. This sun filled subject is ideal for explaining the dramatic and subtle qualities of light and shadow and as Steve paints he reveals their secrets and how to paint them in watercolor. Steve goes on to provide a detailed explanation of how light and shadows function in the landscape and how to depict them in your painting.
Chapter one is a warm-up exercise about which colors to use in painting light and shadow and when to use them. The next is a demonstration in a dark room using a single light source and various colored cloths to show the effects of "reflected-light "and how it describes form. The following chapters cover darks and mid-values, cool shadows and reflected light, cast shadows and details. Steve paints his watercolor, "Chios Boats" revealing all the secrets as they present themselves in the painting. The final chapter is a gallery of Steve's paintings used to illustrate the effects of light and shadow.
