He has been awarded signature membership status in both the Transparent Watercolor Society of America and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. Predominantly self taught, he has run the gauntlet of painting styles, from photorealism to total abstraction. Believing that there is balance in the middle, Sterling has developed a style of painting that is expressive and interpretive with stylized shapes, bold design elements, and strong contrasts of light and dark values accentuated with rich colors. His maturity of style and daring to be original has earned Sterling the respect of his peers and art aficionados throughout the world.
