Basswood is a premium, select wood that performs better than birch plywood in many ways. It is inherently smoother with tight wood grain and no raised fibers, making it an ideal surface for gesso and paints. Artist Panels are free from plywood seams and distinct knots. The smooth 4 mm. basswood surface of these Artist Panels is ideal for artists who prefer a quality surface to seal and prime with a ground of their choice.

As a raw wood panel, Unprimed Basswood is open to accepting any type of ground: traditional powder gesso, acrylic gesso, and oil-based or alkyd primers. You can even use clear gesso to see the wood grain through the sealer and primer. Once sealed, Ampersand's Unprimed Basswood Artist Panels are perfect for mixed media, collage, drawing, crafts, pouring, and heavy paint applications. They can even be used as shadowboxes and for mounting and framing. For encaustics and pyrography, sealing is not required.

The high-density, solid wood cradles provide a beautiful profile and offer extra support to protect your art and prevent warping. The cradled back allows you to attach hanging hardware and display your artwork easily without a frame.
