This is a workshop for artists who are interested in learning to paint in the realistic style of the Dutch and Flemish still life painters of the 16 and 17th centuries. Participants will learn how to see, draw, and paint objects in realistic detail. Participants will paint a simple still life of silver and crystal with fruit from a photo provided. Participants will use a projected image to trace the still life onto their paper. Laurin will also share information about the history of realistic still life painting and its current popularity in the world market. You will also learn to create deep black backgrounds. Participants will learn about various techniques of painting realism. These techniques can be applied to many types of subject matter. The goal is to learn a lot and enjoy the journey.

This workshop will be held at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Boone, NC. Class hours will be Monday-Thursday from 9 am-4:00 pm with a 1-hour lunch break and a Friday class from 9 am-1 pm. The workshop tuition does not include additional dining (breakfast, dinner, snacks), lodging, travel expenses, and supplies. To see more of what Boone and the High Country has to offer, check here.

Your workshop tuition includes lunches Monday through Thursday catered by Wildwood Community Market and Deli, a local gourmet delicatessen specializing in locally sourced organic produce, meats and cheeses, and bread. This lunch option will allow students to focus on their art without the stress of traveling and dining. Additionally, Cheap Joe's Staff has organized a Welcome Dinner for participants who choose to participate at one of our excellent local restaurants.

    Workshop Terms and Conditions

Level 3: Intermediate (and up) - Assumes the student already has a basic knowledge of the medium. Average paced with individual help for all students.

Laurin McCracken, AWS, NWS, is a realist watercolorist. His approach to still-life painting emulates that of the Dutch and Flemish still-life painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. He is a signature member of more than a dozen watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society; his paintings have won multiple awards and have been included in competitive and invited exhibitions around the world. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Watercolor Museum, Fabriano, Italy, The National Museum of China in Beijing, The Museum of the University of Mississippi, and other institutions.

Cancellation Policy - By completing your registration transaction, whether online or by phone, you are agreeing to accept the following cancellation policy: A $200 cancellation fee applies if you cancel at least 2 weeks in advance. There is NO refund for any reason if you cancel within 2 weeks prior to or during the class. Sorry, no transfers. There are no refunds for missed days, early departure, or no-shows. If Cheap Joe's or the instructor cancels the class, you will receive a full refund of tuition, but not other related expenses, lodging, or travel. For this reason, we highly recommend travelers' insurance to help protect you from any unforeseen issues.
